Episode 231: Food as Medicine: Healing Through Food
About the Podcast
Today, Clancy speaks with Dr. Deborah Kennedy, chef, nutrition scientist, and founder of The Food Coach Academy. You won’t want to miss their powerful discussion on what “Food Is Medicine” really means, how food connects to healing, and why we must avoid turning nutrition into another form of medical control.
About Dr. Deborah Kennedy
Dr. Deborah Kennedy is a chef and public health nutritionist with over 30 years of experience uniting nutrition science and the culinary arts to heal people, communities, and the planet, one bite at a time. She is the CEO of The Food Coach Academy, Build Healthy Kids, and Culinary Rehab. Holding a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from Tufts University, Dr. Kennedy is also certified in Value-Based Medicine from The Dartmouth Institute.
Discussion Takeaways
- Dr. Kennedy’s journey into “Food Is Medicine” began with her own experience as a cancer survivor. Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma during her doctoral studies, she was given two weeks to live. That moment changed how she viewed food, medicine, and healing, and led her to explore holistic and complementary medicine.
- Food is medicine, but it should not be medicalized. True healing comes from connection, community, and understanding people’s food stories and cultures.
- Everyone plays a role in the healing process, not just doctors and dietitians, but also food coaches, community workers, and families. The patient is at the center.
- Turning food and farming into trends, such as “regenerative” or “organic-only,” can alienate people who lack access to those foods. Real progress begins when we value all forms of food that nourish and respect people’s realities.
- Food dignity means more than just access. It is about love, connection, and worth. Every person deserves food that nourishes the body and honors culture and community.
#1 tip to improve access to healthy food
