Discussion Takeaways
- Teens for Food Justice is working to build a food-secure future and a just food system through school-based, youth-led hydroponic farming.
- Food insecurity is not an issue limited to any specific geographic area. It exists everywhere.
- A fundamental issue in the food system is that fruits and vegetables are considered specialty products, even though they are the foundation of a healthy diet.
- Students are inspired by the idea that the food work they take part in leads to a meal and the joy of sharing it with others.
- School-based farms are designed to produce about 7,000 to 10,000 units of fresh produce annually and are tailored to the number of students in each class in New York City.
- Food dignity means ensuring everyone has access to affordable, high-quality, healthy food and the kind of food they want to eat. It also means that those who grow, produce, prepare, and serve our food are well-paid and treated with dignity.
