Discussion Takeaways

  • Food brings people together and helps support one another. There is power in food and the conversation that comes from that.
  • It is challenging to work with foods brought in from different donors and the role that donors have in where food can go.
  • The local food purchasing agreement program or the USDA program is where people can buy local food and then distribute it directly to agencies.
  • Supporting local farmers is building resiliency, food sovereignty, and the end game to have the foods that we need in our communities.
  • Direct services are now the safety net, catching as many people as possible, and SNAP is becoming a supplemental.
  • Food dignity means being able to access the food that helps people and the community thrive in a way that best suits their lifestyle and work.

  • Food dignity is being able to access foods that are culturally relevant and being able to have the necessary tools to create dishes and meals with that food.
